Harris Schoolhouse: The Harris Schoolhouse was one of these early one-room schools, established in 1890 by the Harris family, pioneers in the Summer Lake area. The little school operated until 1919, when shifting populations forced its closure. It then reopened in 1926 and continued to serve until 1929, when a bus was purchased to transport students to nearby Paisley School, and Harris School was closed. |
| Summer Lake Wildlife Management Area: Over 300 species of Wildlife (primarily birds) found on 19,000 acres wetlands and associated habitats. An 8.5-mile gravel road vehicle tour loop transects the interior of the Refuge, and is open late January through early October, and provides excellent bird watching opportunities and sweeping views of the surrounding area. Four primitive campsites are located on the Refuge. |
| Bird Watching: The marshy lakeshores of the northern Great Basin, such as those found here at Jack Lake or Summer Lake, are literally oases in this thirsty land. Here, the relative abundance of water allows for an incredible concentration and diversity of life. Some of the most prominent visitors are birds-more than 300 species of which have been identified here. |
