Big Hole, 6000' in diameter and 425' deep; composed of bedded
basaltic tuffs. Raging hot magma collided with underground water, causing a tremendous explosion. As you travel around the bottom of Big Hole, look for openings through the trees to see the crater's rim.

Hole-In-The-Ground Once thought to be a meteorite impact crater, this explosion crater was created when molten rock clashed with ground water. An explosion sent clouds of debris into the sky and spewed rocks 24' in diameter. When the dust had settled, the remaining crater measured 450' deep and 4800' wide. |
Blow Outs Exceptionally large spatter cones, approximately 400' in diameter and 150' high. A world of rock, crevasses, and ledges to explore. Wander into the mountain mahogany-lined gully, where deer, rabbits, and other animals find water, food and protection from the elements. |
