C.W.E. Jennings named this community about 1908 because of a small fall in Chewaucan River a mile or so to the north. Valley Falls post office was established on June 25, 1909, with Ernest L.H. Meyer postmaster, but Jennings later took over the position. The office was first situated near the base of Abert Rim, about a mile east of its location in 1942, but was moved westward so as to be on Highway 31, at the junction with US-395, the highway northeast to Burns. The office was closed in the summer of 1943.

Abert Rim: The largest geological fault in North America, Abert Rim towers 2,500 feet above the valley floor in the Great Basin country of Eastern Oregon's high desert. Abert Rim hosts a large variety of plant and animal life. Mule deer, an occasional antelope, jackrabbits, cougars, and bobcats roam the slopes.
Abert Lake: Lake Abert is a remnant of what was once a much larger lake thousands of years ago when the climate provided far more moisture. It lies in a basin, which has no outlet, and as a result, the mineral salts that dissolved into the larger prehistoric lake have been concentrated in Lake Abert. It is home to a great abundance of brine shrimp, which serve as food for many birds during their migrations.
